BJP is poised to form its first government in West Bengal, leading with 177 seats in the 2026 election results, ending TMC's 15-year rule. The focus now shifts to who will be the next Chief Minister, with several prominent leaders like Suvendu Adhikari and Dilip Ghosh emerging as top contenders.
West Bengal Election 2026 Result: Vote counting is underway in West Bengal and early trends show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading in 177 seats, crossing the majority mark. While political experts suggested a closely contested battle, surprisingly BJP is emerging as the single largest party, with TMC struggling to even retain 100 seats as per the latest Election Commission of India (ECI) trends.
Who Could Be The CM Face?
As the BJP is on its way to form the first-ever government in West Bengal, breaching a state that saw Mamata Banerjee-led TMC’s rule for 15 years, a question remains who would be the next Chief Minister. Like always, the BJP has not officially projected a chief ministerial face which makes it difficult to predict who will lead the state next. However, several potential names for the chief ministerial post have emerged including leaders like Suvendu Adhikari, Dilip Ghosh, Sukanta Majumdar, Shamik Bhattacharya, Agnimitra Paul, Swapan Dasgupta, and Papia Adhikari.
Suvendu Adhikari
Out of all the names, Adhikari remains the most prominent face of the BJP in West Bengal. He is currently leading the Bhabanipur constituency in south Kolkata, where he is contesting against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. If Adhikari wins the seat, it would be another major victory for him against Banerjee. Earlier, in the 2021 Bengal Assembly elections, he had defeated Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency by a margin of 1,956 votes. Also, as a Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state assembly, he has led the charge against the TMC.
Dilip Ghosh
After Adhikari, former West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh emerges as the strongest candidate for CM face. He is currency leading in Kharagpur Sadar and is ahead of TMC’s Pradip Sarkar. Ghosh is known for his organisational experience and role in expanding the party's base in the state. He has a vast influence on the party at the grassroots level.
Samik Bhattacharya
While not officially declared as the single face, Samik Bhattacharya is another name running alongside Adhikari as top contender for the CM post. A longtime organisational leader and former Rajya Sabha MP, he is the current president of the West Bengal BJP. He has not personally contested as a candidate for an Assembly seat but led the party's statewide campaign in this election.
Agnimitra Paul
Agnimitra Paul is another significant, emerging leader within the West Bengal BJP. Her name is also emerging as the contender for CM post, considering the BJP’s pattern of picking woman figures to lead the state. Over the years, as an organisational leader, Paul has gained prominence as BJP's leading women figure in the state. She is contesting from the Asansol Dakshin (Asansol South) constituency in Paschim Bardhaman district.
Swapan Dasgupta
Another name that has emerged as top contender for the position is Padma Bhushan awardee and veteran journalist Swapan Dasgupta. He is contesting from the Rashbehari seat. Dasgupta is considered an influential, urban-centric, "gentleman politician" rather than a typical mass leader. During the campaign, he specifically focused on corruption and governance, targeting urban and middle-class voters.
Sukanta Majumdar
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar is also considered a strong potential candidate for the Chief Minister post. He is already a young Cabinet Minister within the BJP. A former state president, Majumdar’s stature has increased in the party's younger leadership due to his visibility and alignment with the central leadership. He is also credited for widening the base of the party in North Bengal.
While these are the names that have emerged as potential contenders for the CM post, the party is known to back unexpected faces for top leadership roles. In the past, the BJP has surprised everyone by picking Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh, Nayab Singh Saini in Haryana, Mohan Charan Majhi in Odisha and Rekha Gupta in Delhi as chief ministers.
